Time Travel to Athens the Ancient City

So last night I watched this movie called Looper (with the very hot Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the handsome Bruce Willis) and it was about time travelling. Very good movie I think.

Always wanted to time travel. Since I’m a huge Anglophile, I would go back to either the Victorian era or the Tudor period. Can’t really decide between meeting Henry VIII or Queen Victoria.

Then it came to my mind, I did time travel! This Summer, to Athens.

Well, besides the very modern metro system they have, the city itself is completely ancient. I love the fact that they have done such a great job of keeping the realness of it. I saw so many artifacts and the names, oh I love the Greek names, in which I have trouble pronouncing for most of it. The Acropolis, Erechtheion, Olympeion, Parthenon…and I will stop here before I get tongue tied.

Though it was scorching hot and I promised myself to never return in the Summer, I had such an amazing time (and seriously sore feet) exploring the city and its history. Three days there was definitely not enough and there were still many things left unseen for me. My homework is to return to this ancient city again.

So here is my time travel shots of the ancient city Athens.

  1. Italy is a great country for time-travel: Rome, Florence,… so much history & beauty where one walks! 😉

    1. True! I went to Rome, Naples (also to Pompeii, Ercolano) and Bologna this year, looks like I’ve stepped into a different time zone!

  2. Simply stunning shots…love them all…

    1. Thankies kak! 🙂

  3. I just ‘time-traveled’ to Toledo, an ancient city just outside Madrid. You’ll love it there.

    1. I have never heard of Toledo, will check it out! Thanks for the tips 🙂

  4. Some villages here in England make you feel like you’re in a time warp.
    I.E. Hambleden. Very cute.

    1. Oh England! How could I forget, noted for Hambleden. Thanks Jaklien!

  5. I’d love to go to Athens. For me, I’d have to agree that Rome and more recently, Verona were like being in a different age as history is everwhere.

    Fabulous pictures!

    1. Rome I agree too, loved it there but have never been to Verona. Thank you for the sweet words 🙂

  6. After reading and watching all the pictures I just goes back in 50th century. experience really wonderful while reading this. Thanks for sharing and as everyone knows Italy is the best place to Travel.

    Hi Aggy,
Enjoyed it. nice one. And, I’ll surely do Athens this year.
Well, If you ever visit India, do visit Varanasi/Banaras. It’s as ancient as Athens and you can still feel it.you would love it too.

    1. Hi Sujesh, thank you for the recommendation I do love ancient cities like Athens. Hope you will enjoy Athens as much as I did 🙂

  8. Oh wow, Athens is definitely on the must-visit list!

For me, Italy, especially Rome is also a great place to experience time-travel. Just being in the city makes your mind wander to the lives of thousands years ago..

    1. Rome is also a great city but I didn’t like that it was so crowded during Summer, but I guess it’s a popular place to be and it would be crowded anytime! I’d like to revisit thogh 🙂

      1. I went there in March when even the locals said that “It’s empty” But still a lot of tourists! Couldn’t even have a proper view of the Trevi Fountain and Piazza di Spagna due to the massive amounts of people. But the “time-travel” feeling was definitely pretty intense.

For less people, I prefer Firenze though. Small and compact city with a lot of piazza which is perfect for people-watching. Also, great food, and Gelato!

        1. I also prefer small towns than big cities but Rome is an exception, it is so beautiful! A small city with great gelato is a good reason for me to visit 😉

  9. Great photos, Aggy! I’d love to go to Athens 🙂 The best place I’ve been to for ‘time travel’ is a place in Shropshire, England called Blists Hill – a recreated Victorian town, with people ‘working’ away in traditional jobs and you can visit the town pubs, bank and shops!

    1. Thanks lovely! Oooh I love the Victorian era, always loved those big dresses the girls had in those days! Shropshire sounds like my type of town!
