Eating Out in Zürich

Zürich is not only picturesque but also a fine city with so many options for eating out. You can try out many dishes from all over the world in this city, but of course for some, be ready to splurge a little. I interned in Zürich and when I first arrived, I was sure that the city would treat me right foodwise. I was so right. Here are a few of my favourite places to have a bite in Zurich:

I was first introduced to Tibits by the lovely Miret. At first I was unsure since Tibits is a vegetarian restaurant. Would the food be any good? Well I can tell you, after my first taste I was hooked. I came back to Tibits several times after that with my friends, and they too loved it. The food are not only tasty, but there are also many kinds. From fresh salad to delicious desserts to refreshing drinks. I loved eating at Tibits during the summer, outside, facing Lake Zürich – BEST EVER!

There are many branches of Tibits in Zürich and also all over Switzerland and London. Here are the ones I visited (for more check out their website):

Santa Lucia

Fancy a bit of Italian food in Zürich? Santa Lucia is for you. I was really surprised when I ate here to find the food good and also affordable – that is a combo everyone wants to have in Zürich, I tell you. Like Tibits, Santa Lucia has several outlets in Zürich, my preferred one is near the Opera house (very near to Tibits as well). The pasta I ate was good (I’m saving “amazing” for Italy of course) and the pizza are also a great option. Oh, and the waiters were super friendly!

Dapur Indonesia

I can’t help but to put this restaurant on the list as I love Indonesian food (I know, I know I’m biased!). Seriously though, this place is packed with people. I went out with a friend one night to grab dinner at this restaurant, which of course is located strategically near where I lived in Oerlikon, and got turned down because there were no seats left. I had to phone the restaurant and book it for the next night! It’s THAT GOOD!

I can affirm that this place has really authentic Indonesian cuisines. I ordered the rendang and it was too delicious for words. At that time I was also craving for some sambal, and they didn’t hold back on the chili at all, so very spicy! I met with the chef and she is in fact Indonesian. She seemed really passionate about cooking her homeland cuisines and she told me she didn’t try to “westernized” any of the dishes. No wonder this place has many fans! Beware though, be ready to splurge!

The right way to enjoy Zürich on a warm day: with a flower hat, eating sweet stuff

Ah Hua

If you are craving for a bit of Pad Thai or a hot bowl of Tom Yum, then Ah Hua is for you. This place was always full of people when I came but I always managed to get seats. They also served the food quite fast and my visit here always ended up with my tummy satisfied and wanting more. Ah Hua is quite easy to find as it is near the city’s famous red light district, Langstrasse.

And now moving on to desserts… I’ve talked about some of my favourite cafes in Zürich, and now for some places to get some sweet treats.

Mövenpick Ice Cream Gallery

Have you ever had Mövenpick ice cream? No? Well you should, and you better try it at its “gallery” no less! Here you can find so many flavours displayed. You can either eat it there or walk to the Lake and enjoy it there. My favourite is definitely the coffee and choco chip mint. Oh yum!

I apologize for the not-so-flattering image, but this was REALLY GOOD

Confiserie Sprüngli

If you prefer macarons and chocolates over ice cream then perhaps a visit to Sprüngli won’t hurt you. You can find Sprüngli pretty much everywhere in Zürich but I love the one at Bahnhofstrasse. I treated myself with a box of Luxemburgerli when I finished my thesis, and it was the absolute perfect way to celebrate. Luxemburgerli is Sprüngli’s macarons, you can decide how many you want to buy and also which flavour you want to try. I absolutely LOVE the champagne flavour, and now I want a whole box of them!

There are many places that sell artisan chocolate in Zürich, one of them being Sprüngli

So, have you been to Zürich? Do you have a favourite place to eat there?
