Food Diary #1 – Temptation Temptation
5July 13, 2012 by Aggy
For my 3.5 weeks trip back home, I decided to start a food diary to show you all the hard and heavy temptations I encounter during this trip.
So it started today. It was a beautiful and surprisingly cool morning in Yogyakarta. As everyone in the world acknowledge, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and people in Yogyakarta take that seriously. I decided to treat myself sop ayam (chicken soup) with empal and crispy chicken from a small food stall just 10 minutes away from my house. Eaten with rice and a little sambal sop, it was definitely a hearty breakfast and left my tummy feeling satisfied.
For lunch, I went down to a mall near my old university. I just couldn’t resist the siomay there. It was my “usual lunch” when I was still doing bachelor at uni, and yet today it felt so heavenly in my mouth. Yum!
My bestie asked me if I wanted to go out for dinner with her and so I did. She took me to Monumen Jogja Kembali, which is a famous monument of Jogja, where there was a food festival. We started by eating batagor which consists of tofu and meat with peanut butter sauce. Just to let you know, the portion was small, so obviously we ordered a portion of tahu gimbal. It has tofu, lontong, bakwan udang, egg, cabbage, bean sprouts and krupuk served with yet another peanut butter sauce, but this time the sauce consists of petis which made it even more yummy. Of course, it was all served with a little bit of fresh chilli as us Indonesians just can’t live without them.
We then continued to see what else was interesting, so we tried hakau dimsum, which was one of my favourite dimsums. I must say, it was quite delicious, although I have eaten better ones. We closed our tour around the monument with my favourite childhood dessert called lekker. If you know Dutch, lekker literally means “yummy”. However, in Indonesia, lekker is a crispy pancake filled with all sorts of fillings, I chose banana, chocolate and cheese.
I was going to call it a night when my bestie told me a new gelatto place opened just near where we were. I never say no to gelatto, it’s a strict rule I have, so I obediently nodded to her proposal. There I had rum and raisin flavour where my friend ordered bloody orange flavour. It was the perfect end to my day. And I must say OH SO GOOD!

What a great foodie day you had! I love Indonesian food and wish we had more of it in the US. The tahu gimbal picture really looks yummy! I can’t wait to go back to Indonesia for many reasons, including the food.
Hi Kathy! Indonesian food is one of those things I crave whenever I’m abroad! Tahu gimbal was absolutely delicious
have u been to Indonesia before? What’s your fav food?
I wish southern France had anything that resembles Asian food. I miss Vancouver for all these savoury sweet temptations.
Hey Eva, I was living in Nantes, France for the past 10 months, and I was really having trouble in finding “real Asian food” but I survived haha
What’s in Vancouver?
